This term 3 we are integrating many subjects whilst inquiring about resilience across all Year 3 and 4 classes. Last week, we have completed Room 18 korowai/kakahu. This week we’re going to write an explanation text about the importance of korowai, Maori cloak. Today, we have explored the many occasions this national taonga, unique to New Zealand, is worn. The students volunteered to turn into a person that would wear korowai. We’ve had a queen, NZ prime minister, USA president, a graduation, a wedding, a funeral and a birthday gifting. Let your child tell you who was playing what part in Room 18.

Kia ora Room 18. Wow, what stunning photos. I love the way you are using your imagination to think about what different people would wear a korowai. You mentioned that this is unique to New Zealand. I wonder if anyone can make a connection to a similar tradition in their own culture?
